Waiting

Waiting
Advent is a time of waiting, expectancy, impending events. As we wait we are mindful of what that means for some people.

Many of us are waiting for work to finish so we can take a break but our prayers go out to those who don’t have work or who can’t work but who would really like to work. May the resources of our endeavours used for the good of all.

We wait for Christmas Day to arrive so we can enjoy good food but our prayers go out to those who won’t have food on any day because their crops are devastated or they have no money to buy something to eat. May the bounty of Christ and Christmas extend beyond our tables.

The children are waiting to finish school so they can enjoy the holidays and the fun that children get into but we pray for those children who don’t go to school because there are no schools or they are too far away or they are for others. May the knowledge of Christ and Christmas spread beyond our shores.

We are waiting to share the love and joy of Christmas with family and friends but there are many who don’t have family or friends or for whom the arrival of family is something to be feared. May the compassion of Christ extend throughout the world.

The waiting is over, let us rejoice in the birth of the Child of hope, love and peace.

Bruce McConnochie – Dec 2011

Recognition of Bruce McConnochie’s Fifty Years of Eldership and Service
Bruce McConnochie
At the morning service on Sunday 5 December 2010 Bruce was presented with a certificate recognising his fifty years of service to the parish as an elder and office bearer.

The Session Clerk, Ian Finlayson, made the following comments to acknowledge Bruce’s service.

“2010 is a very important year in your life and your service to St. Paul’s. It is actually 50 years since you were inducted as an Elder of the Church. 50 years ago you wouldn’t have been looking forward this far but time seems to go so quickly.

In 1970 you were appointed as Assistant Session Clerk. This you remained until 1973 when you were appointed Session Clerk. You had a full time job in those days. You had a young family to support, you were assisting with Sunday School, you were assisting with the teaching of Bible class, there were meetings, and many other activities in the life of the Church.

You assisted Rev. Ron Hay during his Ministry including the building of the Manse in Lincoln Road then served on the Ministry Settlement Board during the call of Rev. Colin English. And more recently being a member of the current Ministry Settlement Board during the call of Rev. Sally Carter.

Bruce, I know there are many many more involvements I could go on with. I know only too well especially in our time of vacancy now, the extra work involved and over 50 years you have excelled with service.

Thank you for your loyalty, your faithfulness and we appreciate the quiet, thoughtful way you ponder your decisions.

Well done you good and faithful servant.”

It was agreed by the members that it would be appropriate to make a donation of $250 to the Angle Tree Fund which enables the Prison Fellowship to purchase gifts for the children of prisoners.

Our two guests entertaining with song and music, Lauris Vaarney accompanied by Helen Cockcroft were very well received. They were thanked and were both presented with beautifully decorated Christmas cakes.

Jean Gillies had put together “Making Room for Christmas” around the outline of a star which incorporated aspects of life at Christmas. Several Fireside members took part in speaking to each of the points on the star which related to biblical aspects and stories around the five points of the star which were “for memories” “for music” “for children” “for families” and “for Jesus.”

The Singers

After a cup of tea and chocolates and the opportunity of mix for further fellowship the very successful meeting closed.
The Christmas Cake

Our next meeting will be in the form of a pot luck dinner at Dorothy’s home and the theme will be an “ABC” night which will cover food and also attire if the company so desire.
