This week’s hunt

Hello!
There are a few movies which have allusions to ‘Ascension’. Have a look at my post under Talking the Text and email me when you find one!

Ascension Sunday

I always struggle with Ascension Sunday. It seems very strange to me that the disciples literally watched Jesus’ feet disappearing up into the clouds. On the other hand, the gospel writers were surely trying to tell us something about how Jesus is or isnt present in the world. As I mentioned on Sunday, the writers of John and Luke treat the subject quite differently. What can the similarities teach us about what Ascension might mean? What might the differences tell us about the contexts in which the different Gospels were written?

An interesting way into exploring Ascension is to a Google image search on Ascension, and see how different artists have grappled with the subject.

There are also a few movies which allude to Ascension – The Legend of Baggar Vance, The Matrix, The Phantom Menace (from the Star Wars stable.) Someone even mentioned Mary Poppins! I think film is a great way of learning about the spiritual preoccupations of our society – once we get our big TV in the lounge I think we will watch a few.

Have a good week,

Sally
