The nights are closing in. The sun is setting sooner, the evenings dark. Wouldn’t it be nice to gather with each other in a warm, welcoming atmosphere to start (or end) the week in peaceful, contemplative prayer?

During the winter months, a Vespers (evening prayer) service in the style of the Taizé (pronounced teh – zay) community is being offered at St Paul’s Presbyterian Church. The Taizé community is an ecumenical community in the south of France, where people of all ages and all denominations from all over the world gather to eat and pray together and discover a sense of kindness, simplicity and belonging.

St Paul’s Presbyterian and Trinity Methodist as members of the Inner City Covenant churches are offering evening prayers (Vespers) one Sunday a month in addition to regular evening worship. In summer, the cool vibe of Jazz Vespers, and in winter the warm hospitality of Taizé. Whether you live in Napier, or are a visitor, whether you usually come to church or not, these services provide a place where you are welcome, a place of music, prayer and refreshment.

Worship in the style of Taizé is simple – candles to light the darkness, simple, chanted songs with instrumental accompaniment to settle the spirit, silent prayer to refresh the soul. Come in, sit down, on a pew or a chair or a cushion. Sing as much or as little as you like. Let the spirit and the space surround you.

The Taizé services begin on Sunday May 26th at 7 00pm at St Paul’s Presbyterian Church at the corner of Tennyson and Dalton Sts, and continue every 4th Sunday evening through the winter until Jazz Vespers at Trinity start off the summer in October. A light supper follows the Vespers service.
